Card Album for 1921 American Caramel E121 Series of 80

After several years absence, American Caramel released a new set in 1921, designated E121. The initial release in 1921 contained a card back indicating the set contained eighty of the leading baseball stars of the American and National Leagues. This set has become known as the E121 Series of 80, although the set contains over 100 different players total, including some with multiple poses and some cards which have changes from one printing to the next. There are at least four different backs known to exist, indicating at least four different print runs, and some players have only been found with certain back types, while others have been found with slight differences on the front (spelling corrections, team changes, variations in the photo cropping...). At the end of the season, the Yankees and the Giants faced off in the World Series, and additional cards were printed which included more players from these two teams, increasing the size of the set well beyond the 80 players claimed on the back. The checklist I am working from includes about 140 different cards (including the spelling variations/corrections), although some of the cards are not known for certain to exist.

At the start of the 1922 season, American Caramel released a fresh set with a back that indicated there were 120 players depicted in the set. This set uses the same style as the 1921 release, with many of the same photos and players, and has become known as the E121 Series of 120. This set also includes several players with multiple poses and/or corrections, such that the final checklist I am working from includes almost 130 cards. New variations of both sets are being discovered as knowledgeable collectors scan online auctions and old collections and compare the available cards with their collections.

To confuse matters more, several smaller regional sets were issued at the same time with the same style and photos but different card backs, which advertised the sponsor of the set. Including these sets, along with the various backs and printings from the 'original' E121 Series of 80, the E121 family of cards is probably as complicated as the T206 set to catalog precisely.

For a look at many of the various E-121-like sets, go here.

American Caramel issued another Series of 80 cards in 1922 (designated E122 Series of 80), which used a lot of the photos from the E121 Series of 80, only with a noticeably different style on the front. They also released a series of 240 cards (E120) in 1922, which included 15 players from each of the 16 teams. This set had a significantly different appearance and is easily distinguished from their other releases at this time. Finally, National Caramel issued a 120 player set (E220) in the same time frame in a style similar to that used by American Caramel for its E122 set, but which carried a clear designation on the back that it was released by National Caramel.

None of these sets are numbered, and thus are typically catalogued in alphabetical order for record-keeping purposes.
