In the first few decades of the 20th century, major card releases were sporadic. The most prominent sets issued from this period were from Tobacco companies, particularily the American Tobacco Company. Many of the sets from this period were only distributed as local promotions, or focused only on players from a few (or one) team. Cards took a variety of forms and sizes, from strips with multiple players to large photos of a single player. (A large series of such photos was produced by the Exhibit Supply Company and distributed by machines at arcades and fairs; the Exhibit Co. continued to produce these photos until the mid 60's.) Some issues were released over several years, with multiple variations of the same card as players changed teams. Checklists for early sets are sometimes incomplete, as previously unknown cards from sets occasionally still turn up.

Following the Depression in the 1930's, baseball cards took on a form closer to what they have become today. The Goudey Gum company produced a landmark set of 240 color cards (sold with gum) in 1933. Goudey continued to release cards of various types until the late thirties, and several other gum and candy manufacturers also produced sets during this period. In 1939, Gum Inc. released the first of three issues, the "Play Ball" sets. The last of these, in 1941, was in color. World War II brought and end to their series, and no major sets were issued again until 1948.

In 1948 Bowman Gum (which was formerly Gum Inc.) released a 48 card set, while Leaf Gum released a 98 card set during 1948 and 1949. Leaf discontinued its series, while Bowman continued to release yearly sets. In 1951, Topps released two small sets of 52 cards each, and in 1952 they issued a major, 407 card set, one of the largest sets ever at that time. Over the next few years, Bowman and Topps battled for control of the baseball card market. Topps bought out Bowman in January, 1956 to gain sole control of the market. Their sets from 1956 to 1980 set the standards for baseball cards today.

The lists below cover a fraction of the sets released from 1900 to 1949. I have identified players with the Cardinals, Browns, and Terriers based on the text on the back whenever possible, but also based on the player's uniform. Players wearing a St. Louis uniform but listed in the text as with another club are noted, if I have identified them as such. Most of the identification was done from scans of the cards I located while browsing the web, although I have verified some cards from reprints I own. As always, I hope to add more sets to this listing as I can.
