A comparison of the two sketches of the Empire club, printed in 1888 and 1895, respectively. The poses for the players are the same in both sketches, suggesting a common photo was used as a basis. The players are identified identically, except for the player second from the right in the back row. In 1888, this player was identified as Tom Welch, while in 1895 the player was identified as David Duffy. The players identified most closely resemble the lineups from 1869, not 1867 or 1868. The differences between the captions suggest that the identifications may have been made from memory, and not from any listing on the photo itself.
