The 1913 St. Louis Terriers Team Photo
This team photo was put up for auction at Heritage Auctions in February 2024. Other than a few photos published in the newspapers at the time, it is the only photo of the club that I am aware of. It shows the eighteen members of the club (including manage O'Connor) lined up in the Terriers home field, the stadium for St. Louis University located at Kingshighway and Manchester. The timing of the photo was late May, 1913, right after the club returned from the final stop on a three-city road trip through Covington, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. Jack Ridgway (Mullin) and Leo Witterstatetter (Jones) joined the club in Indianapolis, along with Casey Smith (playing under the name Brown). Reis pitched for Indianapolis against St. Louis on May 21, while Smith pitched for St. Louis in the final game of their road trip on May 22. This puts the date of the photo no earlier than May 23, after the club returned to St. Louis.
Hohnhosrt's final game with the club was on May 28. After six games in St. Louis, the final one being on May 30, the team travelled to Chicago for the first game of there on May 31. Carmen pitched in his one credited appearance on June 1, and David Gaston made his debut with the club that same day. It is doubtful Hohnhorst made the trip to Chicago with the team, so the photo was taken between May 23 and May 30, and more likely no later than May 28. On that date (May 28), fifteen of the seventeen players in the photo appeared in the game against Pittsburgh (the execptions being Ridgway and Carmen).
