Game 38: June 19, 1888

@ Chicago
Chicago 8, St. Louis 5
Record: 14-24

The final game of the series agains the Maroons and the final game of the road trip was played before a crowd of approximately 3000 people, including about 500 politicians in town for the Republican National Convention. The game was the last with the Whites for Harry Staley and Jake Beckley, who were sold to Pittsburgh that day for $3500. Staley struck out six, but also allowed 14 hits and 8 runs (7 earned). The Whites scored 5 runs on 6 hits, only one of which was earned. The loss was their eighth in a row.

Pete Gallagher played third base for the Whites. Gallagher previously played with Minneapolis, but was injured at the end of May and returned home to Chicago. The Whites had been using Hines at shortstop since Herr was sent to the Browns ten days earlier. With Gallagher at third base, Crooks shifted to second base, Nicholson moved to shortstop, and Hines moved back to center field. Some of the papers of the time speculated that he would be signed by the Whites, but he was most likely just a fill-in for the day. There had been rumors all month that the Whites were being sold to this city or that group, and Von der Ahe insisted that he was trying to find a buyer for the club rather than sell players individually. With the sale of Beckley and Staley, it was clear he was now trying to recover whatever he could from his losses on the club. Ironically, Beckley would go on to become a Hall of Famer in Pittsburgh, so perhaps the better way for Von der Ahe to recoup his money may have been to keep Beckley and enjoy the success that may have followed for the Browns.
