"Had Staley pitched beer kegs over the plate at Sportsman's park yesterday, it is doubtful whether the St. Paul team would have made enough hits to win a game." This is how the St. Louis Republican started their game recap. Staley allowed just three hits while striking out five in the victory. The offense had ten hits, and the defense made only two errors. It might have been the cleanest game the club played thus far. Staley was considered one of the top pitchers in the Western Association, and most thought it was only a matter of time before he was transferred to the Browns.
