Game 10: May 12, 1888

@ Kansas City
Kansas City 7, St. Louis 5
Record: 5-5

The Whites started their first road trip with a three game series in Kansas City. The Post-Dispatch described Staley as effective but wild in the game. He walked Manning as the lead-off hitter in the first, and that walk turned into a run with a stolen base, a fielders choice, and a long fly out. He walked Cartwright to start the second, and a passed ball and wild pitch later and he was on third. A dropped third strike led to a run down between third and home, the end result of which was a bad throw, another run scored, and the batter on third. Another passed ball and the Blues led 3-0: three runs and zero hits for Kansas City. Kansas City then got its first hit (a double by Bradley), which turned into a fourth run after a fielder's choice and another wild pitch, putting the Whites were down 4-0 after two innings with only one hit allowed.

The Whites got one run back in the third when Dolan singled, advanced on a fielder's choice, and scored on a single by Nicholson. Beckkley's single put runners on first and third with only one out, but Beckley then was picked off, and Crooks flied out to end the inning. But Staley gave up two more runs in the fourth with two outs on consecutive hits by McCarty, Wells and Manning, leaving the Whites down by a score of 6-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Whites managed to string together some hits with a walk and an error to score four runs to bring the score to 6-5, but that was all they managed. Kansas City scored once more in the eighth to make the final score 7-5. Staley walked three, hit one batter and threw two wild pitches, and Dolan had five passed balls in the loss.

Both the Kansas City Times and the Kansas City Star provided detailed accounts of the game, which allows a fairly consistent recconstruction of the play-by-play of the game, provided below.
