The Narrows was the name local custom had given to a scattered group of farms in a valley in extreme northern Banks County, Georgia. In the 1880s the people at The Narrows, maybe fifty in all, got their mail out of Baldwin, although for almost anything they needed to buy they had to make a slow trip of three or four miles by wagon, buggy, or on horseback over the rutted road into Cornelia in Habersham County. Situated in the upper Georgia piedmont just at the edge of the southernmost extension of the Great Smoky Mountains, The Narrows was the proverbial geographical expression, appearing on no maps of northeastern Georgia. Port Sullivan, Texas
Eighteen miles east of Cameron along the Brazos River in eastern Milam County. When steamboat navigation in the area proved to be profitable during the mid-nineteen century, a community grew atop the bluff overlooking the river. Postal services began in 1852. The fact that the area was free from flooding, unlike the surrounding agricultural land, contributed greatly to the town's development. The area was dependent on steamboat transportation, and as railway construction became more dominant, the necessity of a rail line running through town was apparent. In 1873 the railroad chose to run its line a few miles downstream, and Port Sullivan faded away by the 1890s. In the early 1900s, however, a cotton gin and general store were built near the old town site, and a second Port Sullivan post office began operation in 1914. This community had no relation to the old steamboat port, other than its geographic proximity. The post office was discontinued by 1941, and the second Port Sullivan disappeared from the map.
