Lenger Geographical Database

The Lenger Geographical Database was compiled by Fred Lenger as an answer to the simple question "Where is that place?" in connection with where major league baseball players (and managers, coaches and umpires) lived, died and were buried. Starting with biographical data from various sources (originally from Total Baseball years ago), Fred identified the US County for cities, towns, and forgotten locations for these places. This information is now presented here in a searchable database that allows one to identify where these places are. Click here for a brief introduction to the database from Fred.

Much of the work done was behind the scenes, identifying not just where current towns are located, but also researching locales that no longer exist. (For example, a player who died in Constantinople is now buried in Instabul.) Some player records have notations indicating name changes, but all of this information is contained in five Appendixes that list all such information identified while compiling the database.

For now, can you choose the country and state (and county for US states and territories), and the database will list players from that locale. The next step will be to reverse the search, so selecting a player will identify where that player lived (or died), and who else was connected to that location.

To start, select a location through the menus or click on a country on the map. Fred has assemled an amazing set of data, allowing new connections to be made. My job is to try and make that data accessible to you, visitors to this site.
