Game 27: June 2, 1888

@ Des Moines
St. Louis 4, Des Moines 3
Record: 12-15

June 2 marked the end of a stretch of 13 games scheduled in 12 days for the Whites. A rainout cancelled one of those games, and moving the game from May 28 to May 27 (to create another double header) created a second day off in that stretch, but it was clear by the end of this stretch how worn down the pitching was getting. Staley started after having a couple of days off, and the results were significantly better than in his previous start. He struck out 11 and scattered three hits and two walks before a string of three hits scored two runs for Des Moines in the ninth. The Whites were held scoreless until the seventh, when three doubles resulted in two runs. They scored twice more in the eighth, and held on for a 4-3 win. Herr was 2-4 with two doubles, while Staley was 2-3 with a double.

Des Moines presented St. Louis with a game yesterday in fine style. The home players evidently thought they had padded their batting records enough in the first two games with this club, to lay on their oars, and they did it sure enough. Staley twirled for the visitors, and if he had pitched flour barrels and cheese boxes at them they wouldn't have touched them with the stick, for fear of getting a base hit. The visitors were not so modest, however, and pounded out four earned runs, and if they had not been slower than molasses in winter when running bases they could have had more.
