Game 31: June 9, 1888

@ Minneapolis
Minneapolis 5, St. Louis 2
Record: 14-17

With Herr called to join the Browns, Hines moved in to play shortstop, and Dolan started in center field. Dolan made two fine running catches in center, one of which split his finger, but he stayed in the game.

The game started under a cloudy sky, and there was a brief rain delay during the bottom of the first inning while the Whites were batting. Both teams scored once in the first, and the Whites took a one-run lead in the bottom of the third before Minneapolis tied it in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, the rain started again, and "by aid of errors and a slippery ball Minneapolis scored three runs" (Minneapolis Star Tribune). Crooks and Arundel were responsible for the errors in the top of the fifth. Reportedly the Whites tried to stall for the rain in the top of the fifth, and then failed to score in the bottom of the fifth. The rain turned heavier at the end of the fifth, and the game was called after just five innings. Nicholson scored both the runs for the Whites with two hits in three at-bats.
