"It is sufficient commentary on the game that seventeen runs were made, and not a solitary one of them earned" (St. Paul Globe). The Maroons jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings, before the Whites got their first two runs in the fifth. That is the way it remained until the ninth, when eight runs were scored by the two clubs combined. First the Maroons scored three runs to extend their 7-2 into a 10-2 lead. Then, the Whites scored five in the bottom of the inning to make the game seem closer than it really was. Staley struck out 8 while walking only 2, in addition to getting one hit and scoring two runs. The Whites also out-hit the Maroons (9-8) and got 5 walks, but six errors in the field doomed them. The St. Paul Globe was completely unimpressed with the game as a whole and the Whites in particular. "The St. Louis men seemed to be chained to the bases, and when they were compelled by fortuitous circumstances to camp awhile on a succeeding base they did it with all the gazelle-like grace of a prairie schooner... They simply didn't want to play ball, and they didn't." This wasn't the only time there was a critique of the base-running abilities of the Whites. Early in the season they seemed to steal bases significantly more than later in the season. They had roughly half their season total in stolen bases (56) by their fifteenth game, and 95 as a team through the end of May. They stole just 21 more in the 14 games they played in June. There is no record of how many times they were caught stealing.
