Game 2: May 1, 1888

St. Louis 8, Milwaukee 3
Record: 2-0

After being rained out on April 29 and having the game on April 30 postponed due to cold weather, the Whites finally played their second game of the season on May 1. The lineup for the game printed in the St. Louis newspapers the morning of the game listed Jim Devlin as the starter. (This had been the case the two previous days as well.) Devlin was reserved by the Browns for 1888, and thus was ineligible to play for the Whites. Instead, Ed Sproat made his first start for the Whites after missing all of Spring Training due to illness. The Sporting Life reported that Sproat arrived in town from his home in Louisville and pitched in the game that same day (May 9, 1888). The game was tied 2-2 going into the ninth. The Whites scored a run in the top of the ninth (the home team batted first in the inning) when Crooks walked, stole second, and then scored on a hit by Herr. Milwaukee tied the game with a run of their own in the bottom of the ninth, as Crooks fumbled two balls in the inning, and the Whites went to their first extra inning game of the season. The game remained tied until the 12th. In the top of the 12th, the Whites scored five runs on an error, two singles, a triple, and a home run by Herr, which went over the left field fence and onto Spring Avenue. The final score was 8-3.

The home run by Herr to left field was only the fourth such homer at Sportsmans Park. Herr would do it twice more in 1888, once again with the Whites on May 23 and then once with the Browns on June 27. Herr was the top power hitter for the Whites in 1888.
