Game 3: May 2, 1888

Chicago 5, St. Louis 4
Record: 2-1

The Whites lost their first game of the season by a score of 5-4 to the Chicago Maroons. Staley struck out seven while walking two and hitting one. He also allowed eight hits, three to Maroons center fielder Long, who scored two of the Chicago runs. A key error by Crooks led to two of the Chicago runs.

In the top of the eighth inning, down 3-1, the Whites scored two runs to tie it up. Chicago promptly scored two in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead. In the ninth, Dolan singled to lead off, and after Staley flied out, Nicholson singled. Beckley flied out, but a passed ball advanced both runner. Crooks hit a fly ball to right, which the right fielder Moriarty dropped. Dolan scored on the play. The Republican described what happened next as follows:

Dolan crossed the plate, but came in collision with [Maroons catcher] Dugdale, and they were wrestling around when Nicholson scored. Dugdale claimed that Dolan prevented him from catching the ball, and [Umpire] Brennan declared Nicholson out. Then the Whites denounced the umpire, and an angry and excited discussion followed. Herr followed Brennan towards the dressing-room and told him plainly what he thought of him. It was no use, however, Brennan made his escape and Chicago got the game.
