Game 16: May 22, 1888

St. Louis 6, Des Moines 3
Record: 7-9

Staley made his ninth start of the season as the Whites began a three game set against Des Moines. He was much better than his start two days prior, as he walked only 3 while striking out 9. He allowed seven hits, but they were all singles. The fielding was much better, with only one error (by Nicholson). On the other side, Des Moines made 5 errors, while their starter Kennedy allowed 13 hits, including three doubles. Both clubs turned two double plays. Hines led the offense going 4-4 with a double in his return to the lineup.

Hines had been out since May 3 with a leg injury. On May 20, with the Whites on the road in Omaha, Hines and Charlie Alcott played in a game for a local club against the team from the Missouri Amateur Athletic Club, but he had to wait for the team to get back in town to resume playing. Kenyon played center field for the eleven games Hines missed. Upon Hines' return, Kenyon vanished from the lineup until the final game the team played.
