Game 2
|
Game 2 of the double header was all Whites. Staley struck out six and allowed only three hits and a walk in an 8-0 shutout. The win was his third straight and improved his record to 7-4. It was his only shutout for the season. Beckley was the hitting star, going 4-5 and missing only the triple for a cycle. The Whites only got eight hits total, but they were still able to put up 8 runs, including a four run third inning. The attendance was reported to be 2000, while just 300 watched the first game. With the double header split, the Whites record stood at 11-10 as they set off to Kansas City to play a series that was originally scheduled to be played in St. Louis. The road trip would take them through six cities (Kansas City, Des Moines, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Chicago) and last through June 19. Stories about the sale of the Whites started circulating during the homestand, but Von der Ahe maintained that the club would continue to play out its schedule even as the Decoration Day series was transferred to Kansas City.
