Game 2
|
In Game 2, Staley started for the second consecutive day. Game reports indicated that he was plainly overworked, and that he privately complained of a sore arm. He held the Blues to only two hits through the first five innings, but they still scored two runs. They scored the first run in the first inning on a single, two stolen bases, and a fly ball. In the second inning, they scored another when Herr threw wildly on a ground ball by Johnson, the latter reaching second base. Johnson stole third and scored on a grounder. In the top of the fifth, Staley struck out the side around a triple by Cartwright. The Whites tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a leadoff walk by Hines, a double by Cantz and a triple by Dolan. But with no outs, Staley struck out (one of four on the day for him). The next batter, Nicholson, hit a ball back to Swartzel, who caught Dolan bewteen third and home. Beckley flew out to end the inning. In the top of sixth inning, things fell apart for Staley. Ardner singled and Crooks let a grounder by Manning go through his legs. Johnson made a two-base hit "that fell just outside the left fore line" but was ruled fair by the umpire. Two runs scored on the hit. Johnson then scored when Cantz fumbled a hit by Swartzel, and Swartzel scored on a hit by Reynolds. The four runs gave Kansas City a lead that the Whites could not overcome. The Blues continued to add runs in each of the remaining innings, including two in the ninth (of the three that scored that inning) when Cantz lost the ball under the carriages out in right field. Staley allowed 13 hits while the Whites defense made 14 errors. While Staley and the defense were absorbing a beating, the Whites hitters managed only six hits and three runs, striking out 15 times against Kansas City starter Swartzel, led by Staley (4 Ks) and Herr (3 Ks). The Whites played six games against Kansas City, all in Kansas City, and they lost all six games. Aside from the 2-0 loss on May 29, the scores were 7-5, 20-3, 10-1, 9-8 and 11-3. Kansas City finished the season in second place in the Western Association (and had a legitimate claim to have won the championship), but the Whites could have won a game or two with a bit of luck. The choice to move the Decoration Day series to Kansas City didn't help the Whites either.
