Four games in three days with only two starters meant pitching on back-to-back days for both, and this was Nyce's turn to double up. He lasted only into the middle of the third before hurting his hand on a ball hit back to him. According to the Des Moines Register, Nyce "attempted to stop a hot ball by sticking out one hand, and the result was he lost the use of it for a few moments by numbness, but from all appearances he was glad to get out of the box and go into right field." Cantz moved from right field to catch, and Tug Arundel took over on the mound. The result of all this was 18 hits and 16 runs for Des Moines. The Whites managed only four hits, and didn't score their two runs until the last of the ninth.
