Game 29: June 6, 1888

@ St. Paul
St. Louis 8, St. Paul 2
Record: 13-16

The Globe Democrat reported that the Whites scored two runs in the second on Nyce's home run "after the side should have been retired." The St. Paul Globe was more explicit, stating "Bad luck, bad umpiring or bad fielding are almost always certain to floor a base ball team taken one at a time, but when they come together there is no surer road to defeat known." In the second inning, with one out, Arundel hit a grounder to short. Hines was forced at second. "Shafer threw the ball to Morrissy, who met Arundel on the line three feet in front of first base, and actually pushed the runner off the line with the ball, and yet [umpire] Fessenden called Arundel safe." Nyce's home run followed. The call was one of three made that "were so palpably wrong that they call for brief attention." In addition to the blown call at first, the Globe cites a play in the fifth when, with a runner on third and one out, Minnesota right fielder Carroll hit a slow grounder to third base and was called out despite beating the throw by at least two feet. The run scored to tie the game at 2-2.

In the sixth inning, after the Whites had already scored a couple of runs, "Arundel made a dart for third [on a passed ball], the ball was thrown by Kemmler to Reilly, who touched the runner while the latter was wildly fanning the air with his right hand in search of the coveted bag," and apparently he was still called safe. The Whites scored three more runs that inning after Reilly "made a crucial error" to take a 7-2 lead. Nyce pitched well enough, scattering seven hits and six walks. The Whites did not make a single error (save the six walks) in the 8-2 victory.

The Chicago Tribune noted "Fessenden's umpiring was very rocky, although it did not materially affect the result of the game." You can be the judge of that.
