Signed to back up Green the day Walden was released. The St. Louis Republic stated "O'Connor then sent in Forrest Ailsworth [sic], a youngster who formerly caught for St. Louis U. to hit for catcher Green." (June 10, 1913) The St. Louis Post-Dispatch mis-identified Ailworth as Bobby Ailworth, former Washington University Star; Bobby and Forrest Ailworth were brothers.

His release was reported in the St. Louis Times on June 25, 1913. He subsequently accompanied the club on its season-ending trip to Indianapolis and played in the final two games of the season, a double-header on September 14.

Possibly a pitcher named Wiliam Hamerly, from Pennsylvania, who despite some tryouts around that time doesn't seem to have appeared in a regular season game with any minor league club.

Not a misidentification of Emery, who was playing second base the day Emmerly pitched.

Tex Erwin broke his arm in a game against Chicago on June 14, 1913 (Chicago Inter Ocean, June 15, 1913, pg. 25), so he couldn't have played for Covington on June 15.

The Rushville Daily Republican reported Earl Harris played both games of the doubleheader for Covington on June 15 (June 16, 1913, pg. 8). The Cincinnati Enquirer lists Harris in the box scores for both games, while the Chicago Inter Ocean has Erwin in the box scores, but credits Harris with two doubles. Erwin is in all box scores for the game of June 16, and then is never heard of again, while Harris remained with Covington/Kansas City into August.

Erwin seems likely to have been either a misidentification of Earl Harris, or an attempt at an alias that was not continued.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch identified Hooker as a player from the Virgina League (May 2, 1913, pg. 18). The most likely match is Buck Hooker, who played in the Virginia League from 1907 through 1912. In February 1913, he was declared a free agent and signed to coach baseball at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Richmond Times Dispatch, February 23, 1913, pg. 7). At the time it was noted that he wasn't sure where he would play once the season started. At the end of May, Hooker joined Greensboro, appearing in at least one box score with the club on May 29 in a game against Charlotte. Hooker was released by St. Louis on May 8 after their third game, so he would have been available to sign with Greensboro at any point after that.

Recruit Kahl (pronounced Kale) reported to O'Connor Sunday afternoon and was stationed at second base during the final half of the double matinee (St. Louis Star, August 18, 1913). Kahl appeared in the box score as Hale for that game, the second game of a double header against Indianapolis played in St. Louis on August 17, 1913. He was spiked during the game on August 30, missed more than a week, and then came back for just a few games as the season wound down.

The Indianapolis Star reported: "Vandergrift smashed a sharp grounder to second and went to third on a wild thrown by Link, who was taken from the game and Ginter substituted at second." (March 11, 1913, pg. 8). Fred Link was a P-OF for Indianapolis at the time, so it is possible he was loaned to the Chicago team for the game, and named 'Kiley' in the boxscore.

A. Miller was a Pittsburgh amateur who had a tryout with Indianapolis in the spring, before being sold to Cleveland around May 3, 1913 with Henry Miller and Walter Kirsch. He never played an regular season game with either club.

A. Miller, of the Lyman club, was identified as "the Indianapolis Federal League recruit" in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on April 22, 1913. This player was likely Alex Miller, who the previous season had a tryout with the Pittsburgh USL team.

Baseball-Reference currently identifies the player who appeared in the outield for the first three games of the season for Indianapolis as M. Miller, "a Pittsburger, who played in and around Pittsburg last year." (Indianapolis News, April 30, 1913, pg. 14) However, reading the Indianapolis papers in the days leading up to Opening Day on May 6, it is clear that Dusty Miller was the outfielder still on the club.

On May 1, Dusty Miller and Henry Miller appeared with the "Regulars" in an intrasquad game against the "Yannigans", while A. Miller played in the outfield for the Yannigans. A. Miller was subsequently sent to Cleveland along with Henry Miller and Walter Kirsch. While Henry become one of the main starters for Cleveland, A. Miller and Kirsch never appeared with the club. It seems likey that A. Miller was the "Pittsburger", incorrectly identified as M. Miller in the rosters. In mid-April, A. Miller was identified with the Lyman club as a recruit for the Indianapolis club. The previous season, Alex Miller received a tryout with Pittsburgh in the United State League in 1912; the Lyman club of 1913 drew a lot of players from the club Alex Miller played for in 1912.

Dusty Miller was with the Indianapolis club in the spring, but was released after the game on May 8, in time to join St. Louis in Covington on May 10.

Leading into the opening series for Indianapolis in Pittsburgh, the Indianapolis papers were speculating about whether Dusty Miller or Beswick would start. Miller had persistant trouble with his arm during spring training, and the speculation was that he would be cut if another outfielder was signed. Miller vanished from the Indianapolis club when Conway joined, just before his first appearance with St. Louis.

This was not likely to be the same Miller as played on July 18 and July 19, as those two games were in Chicago.

One possibility was Johnny Miller, a local soccer star with St. Leo's and amateur shortstop.

Vahrenhorst pinch hit in the Terriers first two games on May 6 and May 7. On May 8, Hooker started in centerfield, walked in the first inning and scored a run, and then Vahrenhorst had four at-bats playing centerfield. Given that manager O'Connor had just a couple of weeks to put the club together, the likely options are Harry Vahrenhorst, who appeared in one game for the St. Louis Browns in 1904 as a pinch hitter, or his brother Arthur. Both were born in St. Louis, Henry in 1885 and Arthur in 1887, and both were still living there in 1913.

Name confirmed as Varhenhorst in the St. Louis Republic game articles and boxscores.

"Harry Waring, late with the Peoria team of the Three-I league, will leave tomorrow for Cincinnati, Ohio to join the St. Louis Federal league team." (Evening Star (Independence, Kansas), June 16, 1913) Three days later, on June 19, O'Neil substituted for Ed Green behind the plate for the Terriers in Covington. It was Green's last game with St. Louis; O'Neil was the primary catcher for the club the rest of the season. Waring was just one of many players with the Terriers playing under an assumed name in 1913.

The best known example of this skittishness probably is found in the St. Louis team... Four members of the club are using assumed names. Mertens, the giant center fielder, is going under the name of "Collins." Waring, the catcher, is known as "O'Neil." Pitcher Ridgeway has taken the well known mound name of "Mullin." Pitcher Henry Kupper is playing as "King."

Son of Joe Zoeller, Sr., brother of Frank Zoeller. Played with Orlando in 1922.

Identified from his time with Regina under manager Charlie Stis in 1914.

Powell played four games for the Terriers in May, 1913, with three in the outfield and a pinch-hitting appearance in his final outing. The only clue as to his identity was a blurb in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat on May 20 (pg. 10): "Mullin, pitcher; Brown, infielder; Witter, outfielder; Miller, outfielder; Jack Powell - not 'Big Jack' - outfielder, are the new players signed up by [manager] O'Connor since leaving the city." "Big Jack" was pitcher Jack Powell, who finished his sixteenth (and ultimately final) MLB season in 1912 playing with the St. Louis Browns, and who was pitching for Louisville in 1913 - clearly not the mystery Powell.

There is an intriguing follow-up in 1914. The newspapers in El Paso, Texas, reported on the club in Hurley, New Mexico, which played in the Copper League. "Powell, who comes from the Federal league, is an around man, is a hard sticker, a good base runner, and a good fielder, and will probably be used in the outfield" (El Paso Herald, March 28, 1914, pg. 16). He was released in June. "Jack Powell, who was secured from the Federal League, has been given his release by Riser. Jack was a good ball player when in condition" (El Paso Herald, June 22, 1914, pg. 7). There is only one Powell on the rosters of the Federal League clubs in Baseball-Reference: the mystery Powell from St. Louis. Maybe he wound up in Hurley, New Mexico in 1914?

Baseball-Reference identifies a second Jack Powell who pitched for the Browns in two games in 1913. This Jack Powell, described as a former University of Michigan pitcher in the game articles, made his debut for St. Louis on July 14, 1913 in Boston and pitched his final game on July 9, also in Boston. He has been identified as Reginald Bertrand Powell, age 21 in 1913. In 1914, he voiced Chaokia in a "pageant with which in St. Louis hopes to lure the rubes a hundred miles in every direction" (Dunklin Democrat (Kennett, Missouri), May 15, 1914). He was a student at Washington University at the time. Tragically, he died in Chattanooga in 1930 when he choked on a steak, which he was trying to eat in a single bite. Given that he was a pitcher, it is not likely he would have been tried in right field by manager O'Connor. Nor could he have been the Powell who played in Hurley, as he was voicing Cahokia in St. Louis at the time.

There is one minor league Jack Powell at that time identified in Baseball-Reference. This Jack Powell played for Vicksburg (MS) in 1912 and Sioux Falls (SD) in 1921. According to the Vicksburg Evening Post (March 19, 1912, pg. 3) "C.J. Powell, outfielder, joined the Vicksburg ball squad last night. Powell played with the Texas league last year." He broke his foot in late May, and just as he was recovering, he was released. "Jack Powell, placed in the local baseball discard, has hiked to Chicago" (Vicksburg Evening Post, July 31, 1912, pg. 5). It isn't clear what happened to him after he left Vicksburg, but this connection to the Texas League in 1911 opens new avenues to look at.

"Jack Powell, the slugging outfielder who opened the season with Houston last year, was exchanged to Galveston for Riggs, and later went to the Austin pennant winners, is in Houston en route to the South Atlantic, where he expects to play this year" (Houston Post, March 5, 1912, pg. 3). Baseball-Reference identifies Powell for Houston/Galveston/Austin as William Powell, with Bloomington in 1905 and Mobile in 1916. The player for Mobile was Watts Powell (Birmingham News, May 13, 1915, pg. 8). The Houston Post published a full roster of the 1911 Buffaloes on March 12, 1911 (pg. 19), identifying Jack Powell, aged 24, from Denver, Colorado. This suggests that Jack Powell with Vicksburg was Jack Powell from the Texas League in 1911. But what about the connection to Sioux Falls?

In 1921, Jack Powell tracks from Casper, Wyoming, through Aberdeen, South Dakota to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1921. Unfortunately, there is no discussion of his previous career record in the papers at that time. His last appearance in Sioux Falls was mid-September as the season wound down. The trail goes cold, until in 1924 the Casper Star-Tribune relates that Jack Powell, former Casper outfielder, was hired as an umpire by the National League (February 6, 1924). He has a page on Baseball-Reference.

With concrete information on both the player for Houston/Galveston/Austin/Vicksburg (from the Houston Post) and the player/umpire from Casper/Aberdeen/Sioux Falls, the connection can be made. According to the umpire's Sporting News Umpire Card, he was married in Denver, CO in January 1909, consistent with the Houston Post's note that Jack Powell was from Denver, CO. The age in the Denver Post (24), suggests a birth date in 1887, while the umpire was born in 1885. And our umpire's full name is Cornelius Joseph Powell - C.J. Powell. This confirms that the umpire is most likely the ball player.

Cornelius Joseph Powell turns out to be easy to follow in the record. He started umpiring in the Michigan-Ontario League in 1922 after being released by the Port Huron club of that league. Late in 1923, an NL scout saw him in that league and got him a tryout with the National League. The following year was hired for a full time position, but he lasted only one season. In 1928, he was hired by the Pacific Coast League, and 25 years later he retired after serving his last few years as supervisor of umpires for the league. He died in California in 1971. The photo comes from the Los Angeles Mirror, in the article about his retirement (January 22, 1954, pg. 52).

But where does that leave our mystery Powell? One other note in the Houston Post roster was that Jack Powell's previous team, in 1910, was in El Paso. Not proof, but quite the coincidence. However, in May of 1954, the Salt Lake Tribune published parts of an interview with Powell.

"Powell broke in as a pitcher with Kenosha, Wis., in 1906, but switched to the outfield in 1907. He played in the Colorado State League, the Texas, the old Western, Cotton States, Interstate and the Federal League in 1913. (Salt Lake Tribune, May 5, 1954, pg. 25.)

All of this suggest that the mystery Powell was in fact Cornelius Joesph Powell, (briefly) a major league umpire and a long time umpire of the Pacific Coast League.
